£10.1M CLARENDON ROAD TRANSFORMATION PROGRAMME
CREATING AN IMPROVED ‘GATEWAY’ TO THE TOWN CENTRE
The Clarendon Road Phase 3 streetscape works follow on from the council's successful redevelopment of the High Street and the Clarendon Road Phase 2 works.
The revitalisation of Watford town centre and the public realm improvement will help connect the wider context of the town's natural assets, landmarks and destinations.
Currently, Clarendon Road is a wide, straight, vehicular-dominated street. The office buildings that front onto the road largely turn their back on the streetscape with many of the building frontages accommodating car parks. Existing junctions create barriers to walking and cycling whilst buses, taxis and other vehicles impact on congestion.
Our vision is to create a safe, pedestrian-friendly environment which supports cycling, walking and public amenity. We are transforming the street’s character from its current use as predominantly a traffic dominated road with ‘closed’ frontages to a more open, multifunctional space.
The refurbishment emphasises the importance of Clarendon Road as a gateway and primary link between Watford Junction and the town centre as well as being a key business area for Watford. We are also looking at the private frontages of properties and the potential of integrating the office forecourts into the streetscape.
